Characterizing Gnutella Network Properties for Peer-to-Peer Network Simulation

چکیده
A P2P network that is overlayed over Internet can consist of thousands, or even millions of nodes. To analyze the performance of a P2P network, or an algorithm or protocol designed for a P2P network, simulation studies have to be performed quite often, and simulation studies require the use of appropriate models for various components and parameters of a P2P network simulated. Therefore it is important to have models and statistical information about various parameters and properties of a P2P network. This paper tries to model and obtain the characteristics of some of the important parameters of one widely used P2P network, Gnutella. The methodology to derive the characteristics is based on collecting P2P protocol traces from the Gnutella network that is currently running over the Internet, and analyzing the collected traces. The results we present in this paper will be an important ingredient for studies that are based on simulation of P2P networks, especially unstructured P2P networks.

Relating Query Popularity and File Replication in the Gnutella Peer-to-Peer Network
In this paper, we characterize the user behavior in a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing network. Our characterization is based on the results of an extensive passive measurement study of the messages exchanged in the Gnutella P2P file sharing system. Using the data recorded during this measurement study, we analyze which queries a user issues and which files a user shares. The investigation of us...
متن کاملAnalysis of Large-Scale Peer-to-Peer Network Topology
Modeling peer-to-peer (P2P) networks is a challenge for P2P researchers. It is the key to provide insight into the nature of the underlying system and building a successful model able to generate realistic topologies for simulation purpose. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of large-scale P2P network topology, using Gnutella as a case study. First, we re-examine the power-law distri...
متن کاملTopology Awareness in Unstructured P2P Networks using Accessible Bandwidth
The ever increasing growth of peer-to-peer networks calls for effective construction of overlays keeping in view the properties and capabilities of the underlay network. The capabilities of the peers participating in the network can be used effectively to bias the neighbor selection and improve the network performance by assigning more responsibility to nodes with high capabilities. This system...
متن کاملAn approach to minimize Topology Mismatch Problem in similarity -Aware Heterogeneous P2P Networks
The primary properties of the existing large scale peer-to-peer system include very high heterogeneity and dynamic nature of the participating peers in the network. Properties of peers such as peer session length, accessible bandwidth, storage space are highly varied with small set of peers controlling large part of the total system resources which results in low performance of the system. The ...
متن کاملThe cost of application-level broadcast in a fully decentralized peer-to-peer network
Recently, there has been a growing interest in peer-topeer networks such as Gnutella. A typical characteristic of Gnutella is that it is a ‘pure’ peer-to-peer system, with all nodes being equal participants in the network. Due to its decentralized nature, Gnutella implements services such as searching and peer discovery via flooding-based application-level broadcast. In this paper, we study the...
